How The Overnight Success Lie Got In Our Heads
We have more options for content, cohorts, and courses than ever in history…and it’s killing our careers.
Why? Most of what we scroll past is promising us something that’s just not possible:
Immediate results.
I am genuinely worried about what social media and the little device in our hands has done to our sense of reality.
You scroll for 6 minutes and you see:
- The 24 year old who “scaled to 7 figures in 9 months”
- The designer who “went from $0 to fully booked with dream clients in 30 days”
- The AI creative who “automated 80% of their workload in a weekend”
Your brain keeps getting hit with these compressed stories. Each time the timeline shrinks.
(Where are all these freelancers making 30K/mo? No where. They don’t exist.)
But without noticing, you start to believe that it’s normal.
My friend actually sold his landscaping biz for 8 figures, and if you heard his story you might think it happened fast. He’s only 37!
But he ran that business for 15 years.
For about 12 of those years, he barely paid himself anything.
Twelve years of “is this even working” before one big visible win he could write a thread about.
You rarely see the 15 year story on a reel.
You see the check, the champagne, the line graph.
We have been sold a an idea that’s not real. A neatly edited lie.
Quick Wins, Broken Brains
This device has trained you to chase quick and easy.
A new tactic.
A magic AI tool.
A “passive income” play.
A 6 week creative AI bootcamp that promises to reinvent your entire creative career by next quarter.
You start to wire your brain like this:
“If it does not produce fast visible results, it must be the wrong thing.”
So you do what a lot of incredibly talented creatives do:
- You bounce from offer to offer
- You start and stop programs
- You collect courses
- You change your niche every 90 days
Not because you are flaky, but because the culture trained you to expect fireworks from a sparkler.
The problem is not that you want results.
You should want results.
The problem is you keep believing timelines that insult the size of what you say you want.
Anything meaningful you want, anything that actually changes your trajectory, will not arrive on a Black Friday timeline.
What about the people who promise it?
Most of them are lying, scamming, or at best wildly overpromising to hit their sales targets.
This is especially brutal right now for every creative professional trying to figure out where AI and the whole “AI creative” thing fits in their future. You are being pitched “instant reinvention” on every scroll. And I am here to tell you that most of it is not real.
A Law Of Success You Cannot Bypass
Abundance takes time.
You cannot reap abundantly overnight.
You must sow abundantly, consistently, for a long time.
That is not motivational poster fluff. That is just how compounding works.
Good marketing takes time.
Building a fit body takes time.
Building wealth takes time.
Starting a business and then making it profitable, especially as a B2B creative, absolutely takes time.
You are not broken because it is taking longer than someone’s case study screenshot.
You are just playing an actual game instead of a highlight reel.
Meaningful Things Always Ask For Time
You want a career that actually matters.
You want work that outlives an algorithm change.
You want clients who stay, not just launch spikes.
Anything meaningful like that will pull on three resources:
- Time
- Consistency
- Focus
You cannot binge watch your way into mastery.
You cannot swipe your credit card and skip the season where you are not sure it is working yet.
Courses, conferences, masterminds, coaching, new tools, creative AI platforms, new communities, degrees, certifications, incubators, accelerators, you name it.
If they promise “immediate results,” “explosive growth in weeks,” “guaranteed success in 90 days,” or “replace your full time income by the end of this program,” you are looking at fool’s gold.
You should run the other direction. Entirely.
How To Tell Real Growth From Hype
So what do you invest in?
How do you tell if something will actually serve your creative career instead of draining it?
Use a simple filter.
1. Time Honest vs Time Blind
Time honest offers say things like:
- “You will lay a foundation in 6 to 12 months”
- “You will start to see traction if you implement for at least a year”
- “These systems compound over 3 to 5 years”
Time blind offers say:
- “30 days to…”
- “8 weeks to…”
- “In less than 90 days you will…”
Notice the pattern.
Time honest respects the law of sowing and reaping.
Time blind pretends that law does not exist.
Choose time honest. Always.
2. Skills You Keep vs Hype You Rent
Ask yourself:
If this course or program disappeared tomorrow, what skills, relationships, or assets would I still have?
Real investments give you:
- Cross functional skills in marketing, strategy, operations, creative AI, or sales
- Assets you can reuse, like systems, templates, code, frameworks, IP
- Relationships with people you will still know in 5 years
Hype investments give you:
- Scripts that stop working next month
- Trend chasing tactics
- Energy, but no structure
If you cannot name what you keep, you do not need it.
3. Process Focused vs Result Bragging
Real teachers describe the process.
They talk about the boring, repeatable steps.
They explain what you must do, over and over, to build something that pays you for years.
Scammers describe the result.
They show the car, the views, the payouts.
They barely touch the process, because if they did, you would see how long it actually took.
If they spend more time bragging than teaching, walk away.
For Creative Professionals Lost In AI Hype
If you are a creative professional right now, the noise around AI and AI creative tools is brutal.
You are hearing that if you do not “integrate AI in 30 days” you will get left behind.
You are being sold on “instant content engines” and “AI that replaces your entire creative team overnight.”
Here is the reality:
- AI can absolutely help you build a stronger creative biz.
- It can protect your energy, speed up production, and make your work more profitable
- It can help you keep clients longer and actually get them to pay you freaking forever
But none of that happens instantly.
You still need to learn, experiment, break things, rebuild, and apply it to your actual context.
A sane approach looks like:
- 6 to 12 months of consistent practice and implementation
- One or two clear use cases you improve quarter after quarter
- Actual systems around your creative AI workflows, instead of a random stack of tools
That is what will Save The Creatives, not a promise that you will “10x your income with AI in 60 days.”
What To Do Instead Of Chasing The Next Promise
If you want a meaningful creative career, pick a longer game.
Here is a concrete reset:
1. Pick a 3 year vision, not a 3 week win. Where do you want your creative work, your revenue, your skills, and your clients to be in 3 years, especially with AI in the mix? Write that down.
2. Choose one core skill per year.
Maybe this year it is B2B creative strategy.
Next year, creative AI workflows.
The year after, leadership and hiring.
One main skill, deeply.
3. Commit to one long term container. One mentor. One program. One community. One system. Minimum 12 months. Depth, not hopping.
4. Ignore any offer that promises overnight success. I mean it. If the pitch tries to collapse the timeline of abundance into a few weeks, flag it as fool’s gold and move on.
You will move slower in the first 6 months than the hype crowd.
In 3 to 5 years, you will lap them.
Stop Renting Hope. Start Building Abundance.
You do not need another shot of fake hope.
You need a boring, reliable way to sow for a long time so you actually reap.
Abundance takes time.
Impact takes time.
A creative career that does not chew you up and spit you out, especially in this AI era, absolutely takes time.
So treat “instant results” like a red flag, not a goal.
Choose investments that respect the clock, honor your craft, and build skills you will still use 10 years from now.
Run from fool’s gold.
Take the slow path on purpose.
And build something that actually lasts.
You owe yourself that much.
